On August 9, CNTA chairman Li Jinzao received the visiting Hong Kong delegation headed by Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor. This was the first mainland trip made by the new Hong Kong chief executive and also her first visit to CNTA since her inauguration. It meant a lot for deepening tourism exchange and cooperation between the mainland and Hong Kong. The two were accompanied by CNTA vice chairman Du Jiang.

Li welcomed the guests on behalf of CNTA and said, “This meeting is a milestone event for the cooperation between CNTA and the Hong Kong government. We’ll earnestly implement the instructions made by President Xi Jinping during his trip to Hong Kong and the central government’s pro-Hong Kong policies and support tourism development in Hong Kong as always. I believe that under the leadership of Mrs. Carrie Lam and her administration, Hong Kong will be able to further leverage its unique advantages, elevate its status and enlarge its role in national economic development and opening-up, and have a brighter future.”

He added, “In recent years, our tourism cooperation with Hong Kong has made remarkable progress and tourism has become a key area for mainland-Hong Kong cooperation. In 2016, the mutual visits between the mainland and Hong Kong registered 124 million, constituting the world’s biggest two-way tourism market. We’ve established a sound communication mechanism, deepened cooperation in study tours for teenagers and promoted tourism exchange. In the future, we’ll step up more efforts to develop the tourism market, deepen cooperation in tourism oversight, jointly safeguard the order of the tourism market with Hong Kong and bring our tourism cooperation to a higher level.”

Chief executive Carrie Lam thanked CNTA for its long-term support for Hong Kong’s tourism development. “The tourism industry is vital for Hong Kong’s economic and social development. It creates a lot of jobs and stimulates the development of many related industries. My government highly values tourism development and we will work harder to tap our growth potential in eco-tourism, cultural tourism and cruise tourism. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Hong Kong section of the Guangdong-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Expressway, once opened to traffic, will create vast space for us to expand the tourism market. While contributing to the Belt and Road Initiative, we would like to join hands with CNTA in publicity and market exploration, so as to build up our reputation and recognition as tourist destinations, and cement people-to-people bond through tourism development.”

Mrs. Lam expressed her condolence for victims of the recent earthquake in Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan province and willingness to contribute to disaster relief. Li appreciated the offer and introduced the latest development of disaster relief and CNTA’s contingency response.

After the meeting, Li and Lam witnessed the signing of the Agreement on Furthering Tourism Cooperation between the Mainland and Hong Kong between CNTA and Hong Kong Commerce and Economic Development Bureau.
