On April 20, the High-Level Meeting on Chinese Outbound Tourism, co-organized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Ethiopian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, was staged in Addis Ababa. It gathered more than 200 guests including tourism ministers and officials from over 50 countries as well as representatives of Chinese tourism companies to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the Chinese outbound tourism market. CNTA vice chairman Wei Hongtao, Ethiopian Minister of Culture and Tourism Dr. Hirut Weldemariam and UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai attended and addressed the opening ceremony.

Wei remarked that: China and Africa enjoy long-lasting, deep friendship and the China-Africa strategic partnership has made sound and stable progress, laying a solid popular and political basis for China-Africa tourism cooperation. Tourism resources in China and Africa are highly complementary to each other, with broad market prospects. I hope African countries will step up efforts in publicity and promotion, continue to improve the tourist reception capacity and tourist services and roll out more conveniences for tourists. China would like to share dividends of outbound tourism with African countries, and actively launch tourism aid programs to benefit more Chinese and African people through tourism cooperation and contribute more to the sustainable development of global tourism industry.

Dr. Hirut Weldemariam said: Tourism cooperation has become one of the most important areas of cooperation between Africa and China. Chinese companies are welcome to invest in Africa and help improve tourism infrastructure to lure more Chinese tourists to Africa.

According to Taleb Rifai, China-Africa tourism cooperation has opened a new chapter. He hoped that Africa would seize the opportunity, accelerate development and allow tourism to play a bigger role in economic and social development.

During the meeting, Wei was invited to discuss how to strengthen bilateral cooperation with tourism officials from Benin, Equatorial Guinea, Mali, Sudan and Zambia. (Department of Tourism Promotion and International Liaison)
